What is the purpose of a community interest company?

A community interest company (or CIC) is a special form of non-charitable limited company, which exists primarily to benefit a community or with a view to pursuing a social purpose, rather than to make a profit for shareholders.
A community interest company (CIC) is a type of company introduced by the United Kingdom government in 2005 under the Companies (Audit, Investigations and Community Enterprise) Act 2004, designed for  social enterprises that want to use their profits and assets for the public good.

Our project is to assist in employability, and to divert home furnishings and white goods from landfill, where it is aesthetically/mechanically viable for us to upcycle, repair and redistribute at an affordable cost to the local population of Kintyre and Gigha.

Our intention is to liaise with local vulnerable /disadvantaged groups, housing associations, Argyll and Bute Council, Women’s Aid and other third sector organisations that may be in a position to assist or resettle dependants in the local area.
These will be people or families who are in need of low cost furniture or white goods which will also reduce financial stresses and concerns for low income families requiring to purchase large normally expensive household items.

We will also be making a substantial contribution in the effort to reduce Campbeltown’s, Carbon Footprint which is now part of the Community Action plan for the next 5 years 2022-2027.
This effort on its own will remain a vital part of Campbeltown’s employability and Circular economy and the beginning of Keeping it Local CIC’s efforts to work alongside many others in supporting local efforts to reduce Campbeltown’s Carbon Footprint.
